Iron Master Elodath Alpha (Lodge of Stones)
Hugh is the father of Nora, Jeremy, and Hugh, Jr. He is also uncle to Tate and Damien. His wife, Leslie, died in 1989, during the Castro War.
Description
Hishu
A cruel-looking man in his late-60s with thin salt-and-pepper hair cut short, dark grey eyes, and thin, wrinkled skin. He wears expensive charcoal grey business suits with light grey shirts, black tie, and black polished leather shoes. He is unassuming except for the air of predatory malice which radiates off of him.
Urhan
An aged grey wolf with black at the tips of his ears and tail.
Storytelling Hints
Hugh is a bitter man and it shows. He comes off as hard, often cruel, and uncompromising. He has a strong prejudice against the Chinese because of the tensions with the Brotherhood of the Golden Mountain, and tends to be a bit paranoid, never trusting anyone, even his own kin. He obsesses over every detail of the running of his territory and interferes with the lives of his packmates and his wolf-blooded family unapologetically and with an iron fist. He rarely has a nice word to say about anyone, particularly those who have an easier life. He is particularly derisive of the Tree-Speakers, whom he secretly blames for his brother’s fall and the death of his grandmother. In fact, he bears a fair degree of hatred for most people, just because they haven’t had to live his life. He is devoted to his son, but resents him for having a much easier life than he has had, and so tends to be hard on him. He is distant from the other three pack members, tending to order them about like employees. He offers no compliments, he expects them to do their job and do it well.

Background
Hugh and his brother Damien were the first downtown Phelans to Change in three decades and, when his grandaunt was killed by the MacLellans in 1968, they and their grandmother Glynna were all that remains of the Silver Kings]. Their locus had been converted to a parking ramp and they were under seige by the Ivory Claws. Hugh was instrumental to turning this around, coordinating wolf-blooded kin and resources to get the Transamerica Pyramid built and negotiating deals with spirits to defend themselves until they could recover their strength. He ended up beta rather than his older and more experienced brother solely because of his ability to get things done. His life was then shattered when it was revealed that Damien was a Bale Hound and had murdered their cousin Kelsi, beta of the Tree-Speakers. Rather than allow their alpha to mete out justice, Glynna killed him herself and then took her own life. Hugh was left alone with no pack for three years. In that time, he fought tooth and nail to hold onto the locus and their territory, only succeeding because of his close ties to the city spirit. Finally, his cousins Victor and Jeffrey Changed and then three of the spouses of his children and nephew. Just when it seemed like he might be able to relax, though, the Castro War erupted and his beta, Victor, was killed. At the same time, his wife of twenty-five years died of breast cancer. In the aftermath, Jeffrey left to join the Rainbow Guard, leaving him bitter and leading a pack of mostly inexperienced Uratha yet again. Still, he rebuilt, enforcing the breeding wishes of the family’s ancestor spirit without compromise, threatening those who were hesitant to comply. Circumstances have made him a hard, brutal, suspicious man and he takes no joy in life. He exists to keep the family going and to do his duty to his pack and his territory.
