The Tree-Speakers go back as far as Golden Gate Park, founded by Doyle Phelan in 1868 after the death of his brother, Manus. They awakened the trees being planted to stabilize the dunes, making a deal with them to help in their fight against the spirits of sand and fog in return for their friendship to the pact. The pack drove off the Predator Kings who ruled the Great Sand Waste and settled in the park. They have traditionally claimed the entire park as well as the panhandle, the Haight, and Inner Sunset but their control over this territory has waxed and waned with the strength of the pack. Currently, most of the members live in Inner Sunset and their locus and totem are in the eastern end of the park, which has always been the core of their turf. After Doyle was killed by Predator Kings in 1880, his grandson Devlin became alpha and remained so until 1934, when he died on the Last Mile trying to enter the Lodge of Scars. From that point until 1968, his grandson Sean Keegan was both alpha and defacto head of the Phelan family. After he was killed by Devlin's Child, the family's ghost child, his eldest daughter Tess took over as alpha of the pack and has been ever since. The pack lost four members during the Castro War: Tess' brothers Liam and Miles, Liam's daughter Robin, and Kim Keegan, their cousin.

They claim Monarch Bear Grove and have Golden Gate Park as their totem.
