Hugh is a good man trying to live his life under the thumb of his hard father and his manipulative ex-wife. He resents that this father has put him at odds with the rest of the pack and tries his best to mitigate the hard feelings. He is also very angry at his ex-wife for having humiliated him in front of the family, though the deepest hurt for him is the realization that she never really loved him. He loves his children and most of the happiness in his life comes from caring for them. His wife is happy to let him raise them without her help, but constantly uses them as leverage to get what she wants from him and his father. At the same time, he is trying hard to become fit for the roles his father is trying to force him into, leader of the pack and the downtown family. He is an avid outdoorsman, taking his children camping, kayaking, and hunting. He hones his werewolf instincts in the wild, to balance out the urban skills his pack is renowned for. He sees their job as policing and so has taken a lot of time to learn their territory and master gifts that will help them keep it under control. He's an accomplished ritemaster, attentive to the lessons his father is willing to teach.

He is concerned, though, that his father will snap and feels that making Mike the beta was a mistake.
