His Grace Alder Charles Pullus, Duke of San Francisco

Charles has been in torpor since 2000, ceding his responsibilities as Ventrue Priscus and Prince to the second member of his house, James Fang.

Storytelling Hints

Charles is very well-educated, generally cautious but with a tendency to take regular well-calculated risks in order to achieve great returns, and prone to fits of dark depression. He is a firm believer in the meritocratic aspect of Invictus advancement, despises blood bonds (though not voluntary blood oaths), and dislikes the practice of ghouling. He enjoys the benefits of wealth and is a collector and patron of the arts, both pursuits he feels are the duty of those in power. His extensive collection is tended by Desmond Fallon.

Background

Charles Pullus was born into slavery (1675) and lived in the service of his master in Charleston, who educated him and invested in him a great deal of responsibility in his shipping interests. His master was in turn a Ventrue thrall and his regnant saw a great potential in the slave and decided to offer him the embrace. Charles, seeing the only chance he might have to surpass the circumstances of his birth, accepted (1700) and served as paige for a quarter of a century before receiving manumission (1725). He faithfully continued to serve as his new master’s seneschal until the onset of the civil war and news of opportunity to the west convinced him to risk everything on an ocean voyage to San Francisco (1861), there to make his fortune. On arrival, he found himself in competition with several other like-minded Kindred but managed to rise above the others, partially through an alliance with a Chinese Ventrue named James Fang. Fang first served as his Seneschal and eventually entered into a dynastic compact (1900). Both survived the Great Fire through foresight and planning, having learned through several other massive conflagrations, while the rest of the vampires in the city were not so fortunate. The only real challenge to his authority came during the 1930s, when the Lancea Sanctum Bishop, Martin, attempted to assert dual rule with the support of several devout kindred, but the issue was eventually settled with the formation of a Primogen and acknowledgement of certain rights of the Bishop. As per the terms of their compact, Charles has recently entered torpor (2000) and turned over his title as Ventrue Priscus and Prince of San Francisco to James Fang.

Recent Events

Charles lost a young paige named Natalie Covic to Uratha vampire hunters in the 70s when she lost control during a feeding and left a corpse in the Mission. He decided not to persue the matter, given her mistake and the risk of riling up the werewolves, but he considered the loss a personal failure and it sent him into one of his darker moods.
