Chen is a former Ivory Claw and is married to Penny and Lan's sister, Ju.

Description

Hishu

A huge Chinese man in his late 50s with short black hair and dark brown (almost black) eyes. He is squeezed into an expensive black suit with a plain white shirt. His body is covered with scars reminiscent of Pure renown marks, to those who know them. He has a military posture and tends towards formality, reinforced by his British accent.

Urhan

Storytelling Hints

Chen's manner is reserved. He rarely shows emotion except for a certain weariness. He is a realist and never sugar-coats anything, but he isn't cynical or a pessimist. Underneath it all, he is an idealist willing to persevere through any hardship in order to achieve his ends but unwilling to compromise his beliefs. He tends to be very polite and never raises his voice. There is a coldness to him, when he's angry, that can be terrifying.

Combat

Background

Chen was born into an ancient Chinese line of Uratha which was half Storm Lords and half Ivory Claws. He was taken by the Pure side of the family and brought up within its criminal structure, serving as a young man in the tongs that supported their triad. When he changed at age 15, he was initiated as a Red Stick into the triad itself, a perfect parallel of his alpha's life. He was a good warrior and earned considerable renown for his respect of tradition and his accomplishments in battle. As time went on, however, the fight against their blood kin trouble him. One woman in particular, an honorable and skilled Rahu and daughter to the head of the Forsaken branch of the family, became a long-running foil until, eventually, they faced each other in battle and he killed her. Her death affected him deeply, particularly the howls of approval from his pack when he received his latest Glory renown mark for the deed. Soon after, in the dark of the moon, he went to her father and surrendered. The Storm Lord turned him over to the Lodge of Salvation after beating him unconscious and his marks were burned away. He had done too much harm to the family in Hong Kong and so he was chosen to follow Sun Wang to San Francisco to start a new pack. It took a long time for him to prove himself to the Storm Lord but eventually he became alpha, his loyalty now unquestioned. He serves his tribe and pack honorably, but his deepest wish is to heal the division in the family and bring the Pure back into the fold. He hasn't been able to recruit new members to his lodge but has helped to rescue cubs from the Pure (including Andy Tatari). A marriage was arranged for him to a member of Grandfather Jiang's family in order to cement his position despite the mistrust of many in the Protectorate, which has had some effect but he is still very much an outsider. He has a good relationship with his wife's sister, Penny, another family pariah.
