Crime Scene Investigator

Mark works for the SFPD Crime Scene Investigation unit and is a good friend of Mark Beggs. The two have worked together a lot over the years.

Description

A fat Chinese man in his late 40s with buzzcut black hair, thick-rimmed black glasses hiding brown eyes, and splotchy skin, looking like something out of a Far Side cartoon. He wears clean white shirts, black slacks, and black leather shoes. In bad weather, he adds an SFPD ballcap and a black and yellow windbreaker. He usually doesn't wear his wedding ring while working, leaving a pale spot on the finger.

Storytelling Hints

Sam is meticulous and patient. His pride allows for nothing less than perfection in his work and won't offer anything before he is ready, to the frustration of his bosses and those who work with him. However, his results are always top notch. He is a hard man to get to know, but is very loyal to his friends, though his professional integrity would never allow him to falsify his work, even for them.

Background

Sam was never a popular or well-liked kid but never really cared. He had a passion from a young age for science, particularly physics. Most applications of the field, however, didn't interest him and he didn't want to teach. Just after graduating from college, he stumbled on reference to forensics and quickly became fascinated. He liked the idea of applying himself to problems that would have immediate, visible effects. It was his concentration in graduate school, where he wrote a well-received paper on ballistics and blood splatter. Newly married, he took a position with the SFPD's forensic division and has been with them ever since. He and his wife (a schoolteacher) live in Sunset and have five children, the youngest two of which are now in college. Apart from work, his wife and he are very active in their community and he lectures across the country on his specialty. He is well acquainted with the cops and lawyers attached to the homicide units.
