Mark is an inspector with the SFPD Homicide Unit. His partner is Kim Sun.

Description

A slightly overweight Caucasian man in his early 40s who is balding with graying reddish brown hair, a droopy mustache, hazel eyes, and pale skin. He wears brown or gray corduroy pants, leather shoes, and plain white shirts with yellow ties. He wears an expensive watch his ex-wife bought him on the anniversary before they broke up and still wears his wedding ring. In poor weather, he wears a canvas duster and a broad-brimmed hat.

Storytelling Hints

He has a great deal of empathy for a career cop and takes personal offense at people who don't respect and value life. The more petty the reason for the murder, the more angry it makes him. He is still very much a liberal and is derisive of laws against marijuana and tends to get in fights over the war and the current administration. He is very supportive of the city and its liberal bent, though, and is proud to wear the SFPD badge. He and Kim have been partners for five years now, have a solid professional relationship, have only slept together once, and disagree on a lot, particularly where politics is concerned.

Background

Mark was a child of the Summer of Love, raised by hippies in communes for much of his childhood while his parents attended anti-war demonstrations and tried to make the world a better place. His father died of an overdose of cocaine when he was 13, leaving he and his mother to move in with her family. His paternal grandfather, a lifetime police officer, made a big impression on him. His childhood had been filled with stories of abuse by law enforcement, but his grandfather taught him that there were good men in uniform and that more were needed. By the time he graduated high school, he was dedicated to becoming a police officer. After walking the beat for ten years, be made detective at 30 and has been working homicide for the last ten. He has seen some weird shit during his twenty years as an officer and knows that there is stuff out there, but is happy not to look to closely at it except when it crosses his path. He's been married and divorced and has three kids in high school who he sees whenever he can, trying to be as supportive a dad as possible. He has a fascination with science fiction, likes to fish, and smokes pot to relax. He doesn't drink much, but occasionally gets drunk when out socially with friends. His liberal attitude towards marijuana doesn't extend to hard drugs, due to his father's death.
