Background

Margarita Vargas was born on June 10, 1991 to Joan Vargas, a stripper and occasional prostitute who conceived her after a brief affair with Alejandro Montillo and decided her Catholic upbringing didn't allow her to get an abortion with a clear conscience. Her father saw to it that they were taken care of and, when Joan decided to go straight, helped her to resettle in the Haight and get her nursing certification. Rita was told that her father was a Mexican businessman living in Texas who had a brief affair with her mother and supports them from afar. She has seen him maybe a dozen times in her life but she writes him once a month and he replies about half that frequently. He has not spoiled her but has seen to it that she's gone to good schools, had clothes and food, and whatever reasonable necessities her mother requests (like her computer). On her birthday, though, he always sends flowers, chocolates, and some expensive gift (usually jewelry). On her 16th birthday, he gave her a car (2007 white Subaru Legacy) which is her pride and joy. She is very careful with it and extremely possessive of it. Rita's always been very active. In High School, she is on the basketball and debate teams and attended the Youth Community Police Academy this last spring (2008) in hopes of becoming a police officer. She intends to be an intern or cadet while she attends college. She's got a small clique of friends, mostly fellow debate club members or teammates, and is dating a member of the former.
