Background
SUV was a simple vehicle spirit who absorbed the fears directed at SUVs. The fear of environmentalists concerned about fuel economy and emissions, the fear of parents looking for a safe vehicle for their families, the fear of its owners over its potential for rollover, the fear of its manufacturers over Japanese competition, the fear of criminals who bought them as status symbols, the fear of those who see them as a symbol of mediocrity, waste, and excess in a decadent American culture.
