Mask

A remarkably nondescript man wearing a long-sleeve black turtleneck, black jeans, and black leather shoes. He has short blonde hair and blue eyes, both so pale as to almost be colorless.

Storytelling Hints

The Scholar is cagey, introverted, and can be unpleasant just to make people go away. At heart, however, he is in love with the beauty that humanity can produce and is well versed in art, literature, and culture of all sorts. He loves watching the melodrama of student life, is touched by the trials and triumphs of those who work and live at the university, and jealousy guards his haven.

Background

Mortal Life

The Scholar remembers very little of his life before being abducted. He recalls being an academic and spending his time around books, but has no idea how old he was, what his name was, or where he lived. He has no memories of families or friends. What led him back were his books.

Durance

His first clear memory is being chased through the stacks in the basement of the library by something made of shadows and teeth. Then, with crystal clarity, he recalls years of torture and terror at the hands of things he could not see and constant attempts to escape, wriggling through pipes, tunnels, and holes only to be dragged back by the claws. When he finally managed to break through to open air, he ran with everything he had straight through the thorns, heedless of the damage they did to him. When he returned to the world, stumbling back into the cellar where he was taken, much of what he was had been ripped away.

Changeling Life

Over the years, he has built a new life based on his love, the thing which brought him back: books and learning. He spends most of his time at the university reading or enjoying the creative efforts of the students. He attends concerts, lets himself into the art studios late at night, and generally lurks, watching people and enjoying their stories. His long stretches alone with his books or curled up in his hollow have worn away at what remains of his sanity, but he remains merely quirky rather than insane. He grudgingly serves the court in all respects but one, the assistance of new arrivals, particularly the confused and amnesiac, command his full attention. He remains terrified of the Others, though, and will not expose himself unless it is absolutely necessary.
