  • Aspects: Controlled, Struggling

A booming population strained Egypt’s political and economic institutions early in the century. The result was the foundation of an theocratic state in 2026. For almost 20 years, Egypt was the focal point of Middle Eastern turmoil, threatening nearby Israel, opposing the growth of Saudi power, and angering the world community through its neglect and destruction of pre-Muslim relics. A secular government was re-established in 2045, but Egypt continues to struggle to recover its former stability. Today Egypt is the largest Arab nation outside the Islamic Caliphate. The current government is bitterly opposed to the Caliphate, and may be preparing to take a leadership role among those Muslim nations who reject its authority. Relations with Israel have improved, but continue to be chilly.
