Background

Cliff House has existed in five incarnations since it was first built in 1858 from wood salvaged from a shipwreck below the basalt cliffs on which it was built. Home, tavern, then restaurant, it has suffered from fire and the explosion of a schooner loaded with dynamite. These difficulties woke the spirit, which fed well on the Essence produces by its many visitors.
