Locus

A 40’x75’ triangular traffic island at the intersection of 12th, South Van Ness, and Mission. Two tall, leafy trees sprout out of it, and there's a lighted ad kiosk, a no-parking sign, a warning sign not to feed the pigeons, and a tall street lamp. It is populated by homeless who panhandle with cardboard signs when the lights are red (called “signing”). The locus is one of the trees, which holds a makeshift memorial to the latest member of the group to die, and its influence covers the entire island. The locus formed after the 'Shame of the City' series in the San Francisco Chronicle.
