Inhabitants

The residents of the March are a rugged sort, used to the harsh and unpredictable environment brought by such close proximity to the Void. While they tend to live short, eventful lives, they are also the most prolific citizens of the See and the lands they inhabit tend to be similarly abundant with life, even if it is often dangerous. They are a subsistence culture, trading rarely with the merchants who venture here from either the See or the Wasteland, which has given them a strong sense of self-reliance but also a firm communal duty.

Settlements

Towns

Every village of the March is centered around their pastor's chapel. The pastor is the highest authority in the settlement but sometimes defers practical duties to a headman, retaining only legal authority. The remote nature of these villages is such that the local pastor may engage in heresy, using sorcery to change the parish to suit him or her. There is often even a tolerance of magic, particularly beneficial sorcery.

Hamlet

Tiny villages exist throughout the March which don't have a chapel or a resident pastor. Most of these will grow in population until they are large enough to warrant them or are absorbed into the local parish.

Fort

The purpose of the March is ostensibly to act as a borderland to protect the See from the threats of the Wastes and so there are forts manned by Templars scattered throughout. There is not nearly enough of them to man the entire border, however, so they are few and far between and make do with keeping a careful eye on as much territory as they can patrol or observe from their towers. Much of their work is dealing with heretics in the Outland and raiders from the Wastes. Like a parish, they have a chapel and a local pastor, though authority often lies with the garrison commander rather than the priest.

Regions of the March

The Desert

The Grasslands grow drier as they spread east until the eventually give way to the Desert. Here, villages grow up around the remaining oases and their inhabitants grow crops and hunt to feed themselves.

The Jungle

The Woodlands closest to the Riverlands grow damper and hotter as one travels to the southwest until they become the Jungle. Villages of hunters and gatherers exist here in the occasional clearing, usually near one of the branching tributaries of the River.

The Mountains

The Highlands continue to rise towards the northeast, eventually becoming the frozen Mountains. Villages here herd sheep or goats, or hunt if the locale is particularly inhospitable.

The Ocean

Islands are replaced by icebergs as one sails north from the Sea into the Ocean. Fishing villages exist here wherever there is an island or iceberg large enough to support them.

The Swamp

The River starts branching into more and more tributaries as it flows south until it expands into the Swamp. Villages in these marshy wetlands farm, raise waterfowl, and fish.

The Taiga

The Woodlands closer to the Sea grow colder and more sparse to the northwest, leaving only the Taiga. The villages here herd reindeer or, if near the water, hunt seals and walruses.
