This “nation by courtesy” is bitterly divided along ethnic
and ideological grounds. Despite sporadic attempts at
coalition-building over the last century, today it remains
fractured into various factions, each controlling their own
territorial regions, and occasionally going to war against
one another with the backing of outside powers (such as
[[China]], [[Iran]], [[Pakistan]], or [[Russia]]). Afghanistan is one of the
most desperately poor nations on Earth.
