Ukraine had a slow start in the post-Soviet era; many
of the old communist elite remained in positions of power
well into the new century. Lasting democratic reform came
only in the early 2040s, when communists began to suffer
electoral defeat nationwide. The Communist Party attempted
to mount an extra-constitutional coup in 2044, but gave
up power when it was clear the military would not fall into
line. The “Kiev Spring” which followed gave Ukraine an
open, democratic society at last. Ukraine avoided involvement
in the [[Russia]]n civil war, and has since been a stable
partner for both Russia and the European Union.

Today Ukraine has a stable [[Third Wave]] economy, and
is rapidly investing in biotech and nanotech industries.
Since 2094 it has been a significant investor in the [[Olympus Project]] and it may be planning to begin its
own aggressive space program in the next few years.
