The Sultanate of Oman has lagged behind some of its
Arab neighbors in economic development, but still has a
moderate [[Third Wave]] economy. The powers of the sultan
have not declined much over the past century, leaving
Oman with one of the strongest monarchies in existence.
Even so, the government is stable and the civil rights of
Omani citizens are protected by royal decree. Oman is a
full member of the Islamic Caliphate, although there have
been religious disputes (most Omanis are members of the
pseudo-Shi’ite Ibadhi sect).
