The most important nation in West Africa is Nigeria.
Nigeria’s regional influence is due less to its technological
base than its large population and oversized military. Its
government is democratic and has been reasonably stable
since the mid-2070s, although the military is an important
factor in local politics and has deposed the civilian government
on occasion in the past.

Nigeria is undergoing serious internal difficulties at
present. For decades, local politics have been dominated
by Muslims of the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. This
dominant faction is strongly [[Preservationism|Preservationist]]. Meanwhile, a
Africanized version of [[Transhumanism]] has taken root in
the mostly Christian Yoruba population, encouraging them
to begin wholesale [[gengineering]] of their offspring toward
several Homo superior [[Parahumans|parahuman]] designs. Violence
between the two factions has grown more common of late,
and a full-scale civil war with ethnic and religious overtones
seems possible.
