Haiti remains the poorest country in the western hemisphere,
wracked not only by social unrest and crooked
government, but by ecological
catastrophe.
Deforestation and soil
erosion have ruined the
country’s agriculture,
and supplies of drinkable
water have long
since been exhausted.
Today Haiti is almost
completely dependent
on outside aid to avoid
famine and pestilence.

Haiti continues to
be a source of instability
in the region. Border
conflicts with the
[[Dominican Republic]]
have become increasingly
common in recent
years. Illegal migration
into the Caribbean
Union nations and the
[[United States]] is also a
problem.
