The Commonwealth of the Bahamas is a
moderately wealthy microstate, building its
economy on banking, investment management,
and tourism. Early in the century an underground
genetic clinic operated in the islands; for
several decades afterward the Bahamas were notorious
for designer narcotics and an “exotic” sex industry.
The current government has been effective in stamping out
this trade (or at least driving it further underground).
