Father Phelan came over with the brothers and their kin to America. He is an ancient spirit who has watched over the family for centuries and has an obsession with procreation and blood purity that has caused a great deal of trouble throughout the years. Father has a tendency to arrange marriages and use his numina liberally to ensure that all comply. After the Castro War, with the Phelans having taken heavy casulties, he forced the dead Victorâ€™s children into marriages with the newly-changed Tree-Speakers, which is part of the reason Jeffrey left and is a sore spot with many of the family members. He is also bound to a yearly ritual that requires he possess one of the male line and impregnate a suitable female. This is a widely known but not talked about aspect of Phelan family life. When it is brought up, it is considered good fortune on the resultant child, but this isnâ€™t strongly believed.
